Sir William Macewan's teacher, Joseph Lister, came up with chromic suture, but it could not be well sterilized. But Macewen came up with a chromic catgut suture, which could be sterilized, and he himself prepared this before any operation. He wouldn’t let anyone else do it.

Sir William Macewan (1848-1924) was among the earliest surgeons to attach otitis abscesses through the ear. He learned from his teacher, Joseph Lister, to discard those aesthetic handle instruments made of ivory, ebony, bone and tortoise because they could not withstand the high temperatures of sterilization. He designed his own tempered steel instruments. Prior to modern neurosurgery, he mastered the aseptic technique and achieved results with draining brain abscesses that compared favorable with those achieved with later antibiotic treatment. Early on, he diagnosed by localization neurological surgical lesions. Then he turned to the ear and identified the landmarks on the external surface of the temporal bone used by otologists today to enter the mastoid antrum, the so-called "Macewan's Triangle."
Chapter one of this book is an enrichment of temporal bone anatomy, and Macewan's triangle is described on page nine.

Jacob Henle (1809-1885) gave a detailed and complete description of the temporal bone and was the first to describe the suprameatal spine, though he did not show the structure as a landmark to the antrum. Henle's name was attached to it later by mastoid surgeons, who called it the "Spine of Henle."
As an anatomist, Henle is credited as the creator of anatomical histology and is the equivalent to histology as Vesalius is to gross anatomy.

Physicians learned quickly that they needed both hands for laryngoscopy, and so several ideas came forth for holding of the head mirror. Czermak suggested the use of a mouth piece to hold the mirror; Semeleder attached the mirror to eyeglasses, but the idea that became the most useful was that of Turck, who attached it to a headband as seen here.

In this book, Sir William Wilde (1815-1876) presents the procedure for the "Wilde incision" used in treating mastoiditis. The procedure involved an incision in the swelling behind the ear, and it became the chosen care for three decades.
As a clinician, Wilde played a significant role in advancing otology. This writing brought him acclaim by the time he was 38 years of age and by the time he was 40, he was internationally known and was responsible for training physicians from America as well as Europe. He also invented instruments such as specula, the aural snare, and dressing forceps. It is thought that angulated instruments were his invention.

His works were published in three small volumes 25 years after his death, and provided an overview of French surgery and every instrument used in the 18th century. Du Verney's <em>Traité de l'organe de l'ouie</em> (1683) was the first book published solely on the ear; others dealt with the subject in chapters. Du Verney's book was small and concise. In one sentence he struck down the centuries old concept that a draining ear originated in the brain (p. 149). In a few words and in absolute accuracy, he shows the incomplete tympanic ring from which the osseus part of the external canal originates (plates IV and V). For the first time, he shows that the mastoid cells communicated with the tympanic cavity (plate VII).<br /><br />Like Valsalva, he made errors: He thought low frequency sounds were conveyed to the base, and high frequencies to the apex. Without a microscope, there is no wonder one would make such a mistake.

Description
An account of the resource
Valsalva's <em>De aure humana tractatus</em> (Treatise of the human ear), was published in 1704, twenty-one years after Du Verney's <em>Traite de l'organ de l'ouie</em> (1683), and thus was the second book published solely on the ear. But Valsalva included minute details of blood supply, nerves, muscles, membranes, physiology, and pathology for all anatomical sites of the ear. His book was also better suited for teaching purposes, and for this reason became more iconic. Of course, like Du Verney, Valsalva made errors: He introduced the "Valsalva maneuver" on the assumption that there was a natural anatomical opening in the tympanic membrane (notch of Rivinus) so that infectious debris could be expelled. This was a false premise and there is no such hole.<br /><br />It was Valsalva who named the Eustachian tube after Eustachius in respect for the description the latter had provided.

An account of the resource
This slide of the ear anatomy shows structures relevant to the otological comparison of Vesalius and Eustachius, including the Eustachian tube, which Vesalius hardly mentioned but Eustachius described perfectly, resulting in the associated eponym. A magnified portion of the slide shows the tensor tympani, which Vesalius identified but did not recognize as a muscle. Eustachius accurately described it as such.
